I can't believe how much good, new electronic there is out now -- it makes me whittle a shame stick at Rock, while explaining why Black Metal has been so interesting to me these days.

Since Sunn O))) busted my G9, I didn't have a chance to snap each record as I would have liked to; however, I finally got my Korg Kaoss KP3 up and running. My new mixer was begging for some sort of effects unit, and I hunted around on eBay until finding an almost new one for $200.00. I'm not new to a Kaoss Pads, as I had the first one, and I can confirm that Korg has been busy improving not only the sound quality of this processor, but also the hardware build as well. The Korg "KP-1" was more or less a kid's toy, but it (affordably) showed the ease and potential of a touch-based effects system. The new KP3 works similarly, but has a surprisingly accurate BMP detect, and a sampler, which I have yet to fuss with. I guess if you were really on it, you'd futz around with it's ability to sync to some sort of software via USB on your DAW, but...

My only criticism is that it seems the KP3's input runs really hot, if not unevenly when in "send" mode. Although not impossible, it takes a second to tweak sends and returns, ins and outs, until it's "even".

Leading off in this mix, is Australian Ben Frost (whom you should "kill" to see live), Nonplus' excellent new "Nothing Is Certain" from ASC, some Dutch shit, and #4 from a really cool German artist (whom I think just releases his own fucking vinyl) called, "Ghostleigh".

Enjoy.

Enjoy, and please credit and support the artists that provided the ingredients to this mix.

"Shootin'" in The Catskills.

CATSKILLS_SHOOTING_1.jpg

Shooting guns kicks ass because that's what real American Men and Women do.

Catskill Pheasantry, in Long Eddy, New York, hugs the Pennsylvania border in the southern Catskills along the Delaware River. It is a beautiful facility that also offers horseback riding, hunting dog training, and lodging, including private cabins. Ray was exceptionally cool and gave all 6 of us novices terrific instruction so as to not blow each other's heads off -- and he's not even the Sporting Clay instructor!

3-Way Character Drawing.

3-WAY-DRAWING.jpg

My artist friend tells me this is called Exquisite Corpse, and it works thusly:

1) Fold a paper into thirds as you would a business letter -- creating 3 sectors.

2) Person #1 draws a "head and shoulders" in the top of the 3 sectors without showing the other participants. Person # 1 marks small "ticks" so that the next drawer has some indication of the width of the figure.

3) When finished, the completed sector is turned down and the middle sector is passed to Person #2, face up.

4) Person #2 draws the "midsection, below the shoulders and from hips up", again keeping their work hidden. Person # 2 marks small "ticks" so that the next drawer has some indication of the width of the figure.

5) When finished, the completed sector is turned down and the last sector is passed to Person #3, face up.

6) Person #3 draws the legs and feet from the hips down, completing the artwork.

7) Open the drawing and admire your art. Wheeeeeeee!

ATP NY 2010 Information.

ATP_2010_INFO_1.jpg

Were I to grade ATP NY 2010, I'd give it a straight "C" -- or perhaps a "B-" with a disapproving look. I think Jarmusch's "curation" composed a line up of far too similar sounding/feeling acts: Sludgerock and Stoner Rock ruled.

I've seen some strings floating around slamming ATP's lineup this year because many of the bands had booked NYC shows immediately before or after the weekend. While I think these critics are missing the point, this fact did cross my mind as well. Especially for my favorite, Sonic Youth, who play NYC at least 4-6 times a year including the free show they played in Prospect Park just weeks ago. I think aligning the festival closer to Labor Day might have been a factor in terms of band availability.

Despite dry weather this year, the food court was noticeably lacking (AsiaDog can suck a cock), although the new addition of local BBQ grillmasters with their military grade grill plunked poolside was a good idea. Any of the ancillary bullshit like the book club, discussion panel, nameless DJs, or even the film selection just didn't makeup for homogenous band roster.

I think a simple fix would have been to check the festival sprawl from 3 to 2 days, thus resulting in a much "tighter" experience.

That said, these bands (or aspects of the ATP NY 2010 "Experience") ruled, in order of ruling hardest to least:

The Breeders
Sonic Youth
Bardo Pond
Iggy Pop
Altar (thanks for busting my fucking G9, Sunn O))) bass player!)
Sleepy Sun (only caught the end, and am coasting on memories of them from last year.)
Hope Sandoval (thought she sounded 'too much like Mazzy Star', until I was set straight, wheeeeee!)

These bands (or aspects of the ATP NY 2010 "Experience") blew, in order of blowing hardest to least:

Girls
The Black Angels
Raekwon
Sleep
Ricky Powell and His Little Hip-Hop Slideshow (didn't blow per se, but learn how to load a fucking silde carousel you douche.)
Todd Barry (zzzzzzzz...)
Explosions In The Sky (are great, but I've seen their schtick once too many now; therefore, fuck em'.)
Ron Jeremy

Check out this road trip from NYC to Vermont. First, camping at Knight Island State Park in Lake Champlain's North Hero, then a flatbread pitstop in hippieish Burlington, and lastly on to a few night's log cabin stay in scenic Stowe.
